Welcome to Diocese of Kandy

Diocese of Kandy comprises the central province of Sri Lanka and is situated in the hill country.
It is divided into three vicariates, namely, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Matale, which coincide with the local government administrative districts.
The tea plantation sector, for which Sri Lanka is well known, covers a large part of the diocese.

Pope’s Sri Lanka itinerary revealed

The finalized official schedule of the Apostolic Journey of His Holiness Pope Francis to Sri Lanka, was released by Vatican today. The Pope is scheduled to visit the island from January 13-15, 2015.

The visit is taking place following an invitation extended to Pope Francis by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Last month, the President and First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa travelled to the Vatican where they received an audience with His Holiness and personally extended the invitation to visit Sri Lanka.

Pope Francis has graciously accepted the President’s invitation, and the Vatican subsequently confirmed that His Holiness will be visiting Sri Lanka in January 2015.

His Holiness will also preside over the canonisation of Blessed Joseph Vaz, the Apostle of Sri Lanka, as the first Saint of Sri Lanka.

Pope Paul VI and Pope Saint John Paul II visited Sri Lanka in 1970 and 1995.

Pope is Coming

Information and Media Secretary of the Catholic Bishops' Conference, Rev. Father Cyril Gamini Fernando said Pope Francis would be visiting Sri Lanka as scheduled and they have requested the government not to hold any election immediately after the Pope's visit, as it can be used to gain political mileage.

"If an election is to be held before the visit, it must be held in such a way that ...the preparation for the visit should not be disturbed by such an event.

We have appealed to the President to have a sufficient gap between the two events, and they have assured us that everything will be done in order to go ahead with the Pope's visit without any disruptions due to an election," he stated.

He added, the decision to hold an election and the dates to be fixed for such an election is entirely in the hands of the Government and the Commissioner of Elections and the Church has no interest in intervening in the matter.

Rev. Fr. Gamini added that the President or the Government did not pressure the Church at any time to stop or postpone the Pope's visit, adding that the government was very supportive and cooperative over the Pope's visit.

"The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Sri Lanka had first invited the Pope and since it involves a State visit, the Government followed up with their own invitation," he stated.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Church appealed to all parties not to use the Pope's visit to gain political mileage.

THANKS-GIVING PRAYER

Almighty and Eternal God, Our loving Father,
we thank you for listening to our humble prayer and pleading
and granting us the great blessing of having
our beloved Apostle of Sri Lanka, Blessed Joseph Vaz
as the First Saint of our Motherland.
Father,we thank you from depths of our hearts
for the gift of our faith
which Blessed Joseph Vaz laboured so valiantly
to preserve during the Dutch persecution.
We thank you for the many wonders and miracles
that have been worked through his intercession
over the past three hundred years.
Help us to deepen our faith,
strengthen our hope
and rekindle our love,
to make us spirit-filled witnesses
to Jesus Christ Our Lord
and the Good News of salvation.
Bless our dear land
And grant lasting peace, reconciliation, unity and prosperity
to Mother Lanka and her people.

Amen.
